New Things

Note:  I found this in my "Drafts" section.  Somehow it was not posted at the end of May when I had intended.  So, better late than never!

It's always good to get out of a rut.  Try new things.  It takes a little more energy, sometimes a little more thought and even a little courage to get out of our comfort zones.  Trying something new gives us a little challenge that can be refreshing.  This can be in absolutely anything.  It can mean trying something new in the kitchen,  a new exercise class, or even a new UTube exercise video, a new nail polish, a different haircut, taking up a new sport or hobby, meeting up with a new friend or changing jobs.  Whatever it is I always applaud folks who easily take up new challenges and embrace fresh new ideas.

I tried a few new things this week.  Nothing earth-shattering, mind you.  However, sometimes I think even the little things can add a new perspective to things and help us grow and maybe even experiment with newer things more often.  I'm one of those folks who doesn't always like change or to get out of my comfort zone.  It's much easier to stay comfortable.

In our home, we've got some new things on the horizon.  I have the Third Son "graduating" from elementary school and preparing for middle school.  The middle son is preparing to enter highschool.  These are two significant changes as these boys enter new schools and stages of life.  The First Son will enter his senior year of highschool so I've got a year left before he enters a big new phase of his life.

Summer often offers a chance to change our schedules and have more free time for doing some new things with our time, family and friends.  I'm looking forward to that!

Here are a few new things I tried this week.

Early in the week I was contacted to try out a gym that was "new" to me.  I knew I wouldn't know a soul there, wouldn't know the schedule, the instructors or the layout, so that was getting a little out of my comfort zone.  I entered a little timidly but quickly found someone to ask and direct me where I needed to go.  I even had to get brave enough to ask where the bathroom was!  I know this sounds like such a little thing and I am such a geek.  However, going somewhere new was different for me and I made it.  I even went back later in the week!

I saw parsnips in the grocery this week and realized I had never cooked with them before! So, we added a new vegetable to roast and they were quite tasty!

I tried a protein bar that was new to me. Have you tried these? A little lower on the protein but great to have in your bag for quick recovery.

This is French Vanilla Creme. Light and crispy - kinda like those sugar wafers I loved as a kid! 205 calories, 14 gr. protein, 5 gr. sugar.

Tribesports posted this isometric workout. We tend to overlook the benefits of isometric exercises (holding moves). These times are a little long and do require strength so are not for the feint of heart! Something new - give it a try!

Lastly, I shook things up just a little bit in the body sculpt class I teach at our local YMCA this morning.  When I walked into the room I had everyone get rid of their steps and handed out squares of towels I had cut up last night.  (my hands are still sore from all the cutting!)  We changed up the usual warm-up and weight work and focused mostly on body weight exercises using just the cloths, a body bar, mat and only a few moves with dumbells.  I hope they liked trying something new and I know I'll be a bit sore tomorrow!  I'll wait to hear their responses. . .

I'm looking for a new place to spend our usual family vacation this summer.  I think I'm a little late on the job, but trying to think of something new has been a little bit daunting.  Getting out of the traditional time and place and thinking about making new memories at a new place leaves me a little lost.  Doing something new after over 40 years. . . .

So, what's on tap for the weekend?  If you have a graduate of any age I wish you the best time! Such an exciting time!  Whatever you are doing I hope it's a fun time!

What have you done new lately?  Do you embrace new things?  Seek them out?
