21 Day Sugar Detox Recap AND VACATION PHILOSOPHY
I have written and spoken and whined about the 21 Day Sugar Detox I have been on and the book shown here. I'm happy to say that I have completed the 21 Days plus more and intend to continue keeping the sugar and other processed foods at bay. I did not lose any weight while following the book but that was not the intent. The idea is not to "diet", eat restrictedly or go hungry. In fact, I was never hungry or if I was it was because it was meal time. I ate plenty of real foods. Lots of vegetables, some fruits, healthy proteins and lean meats. I was thrilled that noone tried to get me to give up my morning coffee with a splash of half and half. Even though I didn't really lose weight on the scales, I did drop 2 inches off of my waist. I like that even more! I have felt energized and light. After a fews days I didn't have the sugar highs and lows, the low energy slump in the afternoons and after lunch sugar "itch" to eat something sweet.
I did have a hard time on day 3 as I mentioned earlier. I'm happy to say that was the only day that was a real struggle for me. Now, I will be honest and say I did not follow all the rules and make all the recipes to a tee. I had some wine on the weekends and one day downed some Ritz crackers. Can I tell you they tasted like pure butter?? Then there was my birthday and an oh so decadent white chocolate cake from a local bakery. It was heaven and I did indulge. So I just didn't count that day in the whole Detox agenda. Then my mother took me to lunch and I had a yummy Fried Green Tomato sandwich. Because I had a slice of cake on my birthday and two days later, and the sandwich my 21 Days ended up being 24 days! It's all about flexibility I say! All in all it is a great plan and a great jumpstart to get you to eat clean, fresh and wholesome foods. Since I began I haven't had sweets other than the birthday cake, pasta, rice, bread, or sugar added yogurt. I haven't missed them. I have eaten lots of eggs, healthy sausages, lean meats, some cheese, almonds, unsweetened almond milk, salads, sweet potatoes, grapefruit, not overripe bananas and herbal teas. My "cheat" has been some crackers from Trader Joes. It's funny that the thing I have wanted is the crackers and not the sweets. I'm my own science experiment! So, while I wasn't exactly successful in following the plan exactly for 21 days, I do consider it a success as I really focused on mindful eating and enjoying "real" foods. I feel lighter, lost inches and have lots of energy and none of the cravings some of us tend to fight.
Another thing that was great was the encouragement in my inbox each morning from the book's author, Diane. Each morning began with some motivation for the day, tips from others who have completed the Detox, recipes to try and other resources. It was a great way to begin the day and a reminder of what was ahead and reasons to stick with the plan.
Now that the 20 something days of the Detox is over, what next? Well . . . .
VACATION! Yohooo!! We are heading to warmer weather and I'm giddy to be in the sun!
And I do have a vacation philosophy. I try to get up in the mornings and get some exercise in. A run down the rocky road to the beach and back up the steep hills or do yoga on the deck with the beautiful views. We hike, swim, snorkel and stay pretty active while on trips. As long as I move around I don't feel guilty about indulging in dinners out, local fresh foods, fish and whatever cocktails come my way.
I'm looking forward to unplugging, reading, soaking up some sun and being with my family.
So, if you don't hear from me, know I'll be back. Hopefully, refreshed and ready for the Spring Season!
