Favorite Food Tracker Apps

I made a huge mistake this morning.  I got on the scales.  I have not gotten on the scales lately as I knew it might not be pretty.  I've confessed to not being on the best eating schedule lately and the parties, poor choices and Mexican fare (that'll do it every time!) have added up.  Recently, I have not gotten on the scales and just relied on how I felt and how my clothes fit to keep myself on track.  In the past,  I was a bit of a slave to the number on the scale and it could absolutely ruin my day.  I know in my head that a number does not signify my health or fitness level,  but boy can that number get in my head.  I've decided it's not fair to those around me to constantly get on that scale and then have them absorb all the angst and anger when it wasn't their fault (although sometimes I think I can legitimately blame them for the chips and cheese dip forced under my nose!) that I'd made poor choices and the number creeped north.

This morning I took the number like a big girl.  I didn't even say a bad word or let it ruin my morning.  I think that has something to do with age and wisdom, or maybe it's finally realizing that life is too short to get all hot and bothered.  Like many things, "it is what it is".  However, it doesn't mean that I'm going to take it sitting down on my heavier rump.  Besides my act of Getting Clean with my food again I've decided to also keep track of what I'm eating for a bit.

Technology is a beautiful thing for so many reasons.  Keeping track of food used to mean I kept a bulky notebook or sheets of paper all around the kitchen or in my purse.  Now all you need is your handy dandy phone.  And we all have that little device with us at all times.  These days they have Apps for everything.  I'm not a big App user but there is one I do turn to in desperate times like these.  I like MyNetDiary for keeping up with what I'm eating, calories, protein, water, and exercise.  The App does even more but the basics are what I need so any more just tends to go over my head.  I'm going to share a little about this fav of mine and also about some other good ones out there.   You may have a favorite of your own.  I'd love to hear!

I forgot to mention . . . The BEST thing about these Apps is that they are FREE!!

MyNetDiary

This App allows allows you to set a calorie limit for weight loss, gain or to maintain.  You input your age, height, weight and activity level and exercise for the day.  It has a really good track of all meals and snacks based on your input.  You can put in exactly what you ate, or a suggestion from its list or even input an entire recipe.  It will show you carbohydrates, fats, protein, calcium, trans fat, sodium, carbohydrates, fiber, sugar and saturated fat, exercises, body weight, and shows progress charts.  The Daily Nutrition Summary is detailed with how many calories, fat, carbohydrates, protein, trans fat and saturated fat, sodium, cholesterol and carbohydrates were consumed and shows how many are left (or exceeded) at the end of the day.  You can keep track of vitamins, supplements, water consumed.  It has a large database  of over 400,000 foods and you can also use the built in scanner to input food.
So, if you put in your target calories, weight maintenance calories, and the requested information it also helps by giving planning for a target date or desired weight loss rate.

Like any type of food journal or food tracker, you have to be honest!!  If you eat it you have to put it in!!

Here are others that are cool!

MyFitnessPal

This is another great free app that lots of folks really like.  It's very similar to MyNetDiary in that you add your personal stats and you record your foods and activity for the day.  This one gives you a handy little graph to see your progress and lets you add friends - that whole accountability thing is really good!

 Nutrino

I've never tried this app my self but I've read about it so you may know more than I.  This one  builds a personalised menu for you, taking into consideration how many calories you should be eating each day to reach your goal. After you've spent a few minutes entering your vital stats it'll show you how much you should ideally weigh and work out a long-term goal for you.  After  you tell it what foods you like to eat it will make your menu for you and even your shopping list.  It has social media application so you can share straight from the app if you like.

 My Diet Coach

This another one that I have not tried out yet.  It is aimed specifically at women and its key is motivation.  It allows you to set reminders to keep you on track and provides motivational quotes, slogans and photos to help get you off the couch and avoid scarfing down that cookie.  This app isn't a calorie counter but rather a support and a reminder why you are trying to be healthy or lose weight.

 Low Fat Recipes

This is a cool, free app that it like a free cookbook.  It gives you a recipe, complete with nutritional information and also provides options for gluten free or diabetes friendly recipes.

WeightWatchers Mobile App

Before there were all these cool apps out there I did Weight Watchers online just to use the online food journal.  WeightWatchers is one of the most popular and successful plans around.  Using the WeightWatchers model this app has a huge library of foods, including restaurant meals and gives you the point value for the entry and gives you your daily point allowance and how many you have left for the day. "While this app really is indispensible if you're following WeightWatchers, it's not much good otherwise, as many of the features can only be used if you have an online subscription, which you pay for."

This is just the tip of the iceberg on helpful apps available.  Check out more HERE.

Have you tried any of these?  What do you like/not like?  Have you tried others you recommend?
