Boredom is Your Friend

Earlier this week I was listening to a business podcast and the message was about preventing burnout.

The podcast host said that in order to prevent burnout, and keep a form of healthy work life balance, he found it crucial to embrace boredom. That sounds a little unfun, doesn’t it?

But hear me out. In the business sense, setting up the systems that keep the business moving and somewhat predictable, while not the fun and sexy part of running a business, are what kept the business healthy. The tedious systems, mechanics and predictableness, which seem really boring, are what brings the success of the business.

Hmmmmm., I thought while listening. The same thing is true for all of us - not in a business sense, but in a life sense. I think we can all say we want to live our best lives. We want to love each day, its experiences and feel and be out best. In order to really have those wonderful experiences and to be our healthiest on the outside and the inside, we have to embrace some seemingly boring routines and rituals.

Think about how much fun you have on vacation - being off your normal schedule, enjoying delicious meals and maybe some fun drinks. At some point, you are ready to come home. (or at least most of us are!). Coming back home to structure, routine, back to healthier eating, exercise and our regular habits makes us feel good. We know we will feel better with a normal (and boring) routine -getting to bed for good sleep, eating in a balanced way, moving our bodies, taking care of ourselves in those every day ways that are not spontaneous and exciting, but do make us feel SO GOOD.

It is the same if you have something, you want to accomplish - study for a test, prepare for a new work project, train for an event or make your clothes fit a little better (after that vacation). You know there are certain things you need to do to prepare for and begin to make progress. Maybe that is saying no to nights out or maybe it’s eating that rather boring chicken and broccoli.

Here’s the things. If you have goals and dreams, it takes you focusing on and following a plan. that may require you to go to bed earlier, protect your time and say no to some other things to move you forward to where you want to be.

And that may sound boring.

However, if you know your goal, how you want to feel, where you want to move, and you know your why, it will not be boring. And, hey, if it is boring for a while, it’s okay because that boring is setting you up for even better.

Speaking of moving forward and creating goals, habits and dreams - which really is one of my love languages - I want to share with you something New coming in March.

I’ve taken what I have learned from years of working with other women with wellness AND my experience coaching women plus my very own experience in moving forward during different seasons of life, and created a program that is personalized to each individual. It’s very high touch, meaning there is 1:1 attention within the program making it stand apart from many group programs. It is definitely not a cookie cutter, for the masses, type of process. For that reason, the number is limited to 6. And did I mention it’ll also be fun?

Sound interesting?
